About me:-
I am a semi-professional photographer and also a geography teacher at a UK high school. I am passionate about photography, rock music and sport. I have been travelling independently across the world for over 20 years. I make some apology for my mammoth carbon footprint which exceeds a quarter of a million miles but until cleaner aeroplanes and cars are more readily available, what else can we do if we wish to explore far and wide? I do hike long distances or ride a bike where possible, but one must get to a decent start point! If you wish to discuss any of the places I have visited or recommend me to visit other places then please contact me. I love to talk travel all day and all night long.
About my photography:-
I first became interested in photography back in 1992 when I spent 6 months at college in New Jersey. This allowed me to practice taking photos with my father's old semi-automatic Yashica F1. The Northeast USA gallery shows some of these early photos, including the mammoth Twin Towers which now sadly are no more. Since then I have done a couple of big round-the-world trips plus many shorter adventures. My most recent trips include completing one of my boyhood dreams, the mammoth Trans-Siberian railway journey, crossing China, Mongolia and Russia (2006). In the summers of 2008-2010 I travelled extensively across Northwest and Southwest USA, plus Western Canada. These road trips were amazingly colourful adventures with such varied landscapes - as you can see in my Big Overseas Trips galleries. 2011 saw me visit 6 countries in Africa, taking in safaris and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. I finally got to travel around Vietnam at long last in 2012, whilst this summer (2014) I will revisit India after nearly 20 years to see how it has changed.
My love of photography is fuelled by the fact that light is ever changing. No single moment is the same as the next. A scene may appear lifeless and grey one moment but in a split second burst of sunlight it can illuminate into millions of new colours and tones. We may ritually photograph the same wondrous places, but no two photos are the same. My enjoyment of photography also extends to the researching and scoping out of a wondrous location, as well as taking the journey out to it. Let us not forget that beauty is everywhere, including your back yard, as well as exotic places far away.
"The planet is an amazing mix of human chaos and the handy work of mother nature. Historic and modern architecture created from extraordinary human endeavours exist alongside timeless landscapes of mountains, rivers, jungles and deserts. Let's enjoy travelling around the planet, but make sure we look after it". Paul R Davies 2018
